This is the fill plug, it is always a good idea to make sure you can remove the fill plug before you drain anything Remove the 18mm drain plug from the bottom of the gearbox and allow fluid to drain out. Continue to pump into the hole until it starts to drip out Start the engine and let the car come up to operating temperature. Go on a test drive to verify you can shift gears. Click here to order! Hydraulics seem to be working fine. Before this occurred one day, the clutch pedal got very stiff and wouldn't go to the floor. Waited like 10 minutes and it freed up but now it grinds into gears when I shift. Differential? 2002 540i Give The Pelican Parts parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799. They can figure out what part or repair kit you need. There was a thud when it slipped but no grinding.Detach it and see if you can manually shift the trans. To start viewing messages,I read someone mentioning once that less than 5% of North American spec E34's had the manual transmission. Anyone know what the percentage was for the E39. Anyone got any solid numbers or can point to a source? My guess would be that decline in demand drove the 3-pedal numbers down.

It was also the first 5 Series where a four-cylinder diesel engine was available. Rack and pinion steering was used for four- and six-cylinder models, the first time that a 5 Series has used this steering system in significant volumes. Unlike its E34 predecessor and E60 successor, the E39 was not available with all-wheel drive. It was the first M5 model to be powered by a V8 engine. In 1998, its successor the BMW M57 was introduced in the 530d model, however the BMW M51 engine continued to be used for two more years in the 525td and 525tds models. It was powered by the S62 V8 engine. All E39 M5 cars were sold in the sedan body style with a 6-speed manual transmission. Therefore, the changes for 1996 represent the 1997 model year, for example.Indonesian models were assembled in Jakarta from complete knock-down kits.Retrieved 12 April 2017. Your gearbox is responsible for transmitting all of your engines horsepower to your driveshaft, rear differential and finally the rear wheels. Within your gearbox gears are mounted to and input and output shaft. These shaft hold gears that mesh with each other and transfer power from the input shaft to the output shaft. As the gears mess they break the polymer chains that give oil its viscosity. Over time the oil will get thinner and allow the gears to wear against one another. The same wear will occur on the shift dogs and the synchronizers, which will reduce smooth shifting. In this tech article we will go over all the steps to replace your manual gearbox oil and restore smooth shifting and extend the life of your gearbox. In order to access your manual gearbox you need to lift the vehicle. See our tech article on jacking up and supporting your vehicle. At the bottom of the transmission and on the left side identify the two 18mm plugs (green arrows) on the manual gearbox.
I circumvented this 90 day time line by ordering mine for euro delivery. Still, it took 60 days before I could pick mine up from the plant. But, when I dropped it off in France to be shipped back home, it took 45 days in transit on a boat. So there's really no time savings in retrospect. It took me 7 months to find her.I bought mine a month ago and using cars.com and kbb.com there were only 3 manual e39 540's within 75 miles of north NJ. When my bmw enthusiast indie saw what i traded the mini van for he was so mad. LolI bought mine a month ago and using cars.com and kbb.com there were only 3 manual e39 540's within 75 miles of north NJ. When my bmw enthusiast indie saw what i traded the mini van for he was so mad. Lol Every time I find a parked 540, I'd say 75% of the time it's a 6 speed around here. There were three of them in the parking lot of my old work. All E39 that came to Australia are Auto boxes (except the M5) and the only time you'll find a Manual E39 is when its been swaped or is a personal import and the chances of finding one is close to 0.1% on a lucky dayI dint think it's hard at all to find a manual e39.You guys are hanging out with other gearheads too much. I just did a search of Autotrader.com for '99 or '00 528i with manual transmission. 26 cars were available - in the entire United States. That's less than one car per state. Seriously. I think 5% is too high. It's less than that.It shares it's garage with 7 other similarly kept and maintained and used BMWs. It's NOT for sale! One way to find out more would be to approach some of the magazines who have contacts within BMW and I'm sure there's a database of all official E39 numbers and specs and an accurate representation could be calculated of Manual Vs Automatics.
Most folks just don't want to mess with a clutch in this day and age.Find the number with automatics, and find the number with manual transmissions.I usually see a ratio of 5 to 6 autos for every manual (inline car) and 4 to 1 (V8 machines) up here in Mooseville. They are not rare to find E39s in manual transmission, and if you look on ebay or something and do the math you will find that 30% of the cars for sale are manual transmission, but this doesn't mean much. The reason I say this is because the E54. X5 comes in manual transmission, but they are next to impossible to find. I speculate it is because the enthusiast have snatched them up and are not willing to sell. I think the number 5% of E34s is also incorrect. He many be referring to the number of E34 540i that were manual transmission. Which is a really low number, but again your only talking about cars on the states side. In europe it is much, much easier to find a manual transmission car. Mostly because european countries take driving more seriously than americans do.This group not only buys the car primarily for day-to-day business activities, but they also lease them in order to write off 100% of the cost of the lease from their tax liabilities. A lease buyer is going to buy what's on the lot 90% of the time. You really have to be patient for one. I circumvented this 90 day time line by ordering mine for euro delivery. Still, it took 60 days before I could pick mine up from the plant. But, when I dropped it off in France to be shipped back home, it took 45 days in transit on a boat. So there's really no time savings in retrospect. The V8 buyers are more selective and its largest customer base comes from the professional sector, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, etc.and they more often will buy outright vs. lease. They see themselves holding onto the car for 5 or more yrs., therefore they don't mind waiting out the 90 day period so they could get exactly what they want in the car.
Totally unscientific but it would give us an idea of the active enthusiast E39 transmission ratio. I think the question should be presented like this: Which E39 do you own: I-6 with manual transmission I-6 with automatic transmission V8 with manual transmission V8 with automatic transmissionI have a 2001. Had 70k when I bought it almost at 100k a little a year later. Best car I ever bought. I was only interested in standard transmission. Was going to get 540i sport but heard that post 100k they can have allot mechanical issues on average.Perhaps we should do a poll here. Totally unscientific but it would give us an idea of the active enthusiast E39 transmission ratio. I think the question should be presented like this: Which E39 do you own: I-6 with manual transmission I-6 with automatic transmission V8 with manual transmission V8 with automatic transmission Enthusiast tent to go for the manual transmission. They are out there, but mostly owned by enthusiasts who don't want to part with them. With that said, they are fairly rare IMOMostly because european countries take driving more seriously than americans do. Of course there are car enthusiasts there too, but there are far more of them here in the U.S. The majority of Europeans tend to regard their cars as nothing more than transportation appliances to get from point A to point B with, where as we (U.S.) tend to treat our cars almost like living beings.fussing over them, cleaning and waxing them, etc. Also, most of Europe has many mountainous regions with steep grades which would kill automatics in short order. And, manual transmissions are cheaper to produce than automatics, thus making them more affordable.Digital Point modules: Sphinx-based search. Dhoang makes an interesting post, I remember in early 1997, going to BMW in Reading (UK) with my mates dad and purchasing a 1996 built ex demo E39 528i (with steptronic) The E39 I believe quickly won best executive car for two years running and I remember looking at the car and thinking wow.Hardly anyone can afford to buy these cars new privately, certainly in the UK, the US has more of such buyers. So the second hand market then becomes a lottery, depending on what the original business orientated user opted for etc - trim and equipment levels. A good proportion of those guys aren't even car enthusiasts and that's why sometimes you'll see some bad trim combinations. Many business owners are on the road alot so it makes sense to have an auto in a car this big - that that now includes the M5 as well. Lastly, overall in 2 or 3 generations of cars time, I think very few will actually be with a manual gearbox and that's across all brands. Cheers, Dennis!I dint think it's hard at all to find a manual e39.I can go on craigslist right now and find at least 3 of these cars for sale in my area with manual transmission, but again for sale doesn't mean totally produced. Like Dennis mentioned at least 80% of the cars are not on the market. Now-a-days the only people owning these cars are enthusiast and younger folk who can't afford newer BMWs. Generally, enthusiast are after the manual transmissions which make them much harder to get ahold of. Think of all the cars that are being scrapped, parted out (worth more as parts than a whole car), wrecked, or just plain not for sale. I still say that the number is around 30% manual and those are probably mostly the 540i's and the M5's, because as mentioned before a large percent of these cars were bought for business purposes which would probably want the smaller engine with the automatic.I can go on craigslist right now and find at least 3 of these cars for sale in my area Perhaps we should do a poll here.

In fact, while this car is 22 years old, it still has quite a lot of appeal to it thanks to the simple and uncomplicated design that has aged very gracefully. While that’s 112 hp less than the E39 M5, it’s still a respectable amount of power to be sent through the rear wheels via a six-speed stick shift. The most recent owner purchased and imported it into the United States in November 2019 and it currently has 5,583 miles (8,986 km) under its belt. For example.McDonalds need's buns for their hamburgers.they create their recipe for each particular bun.but the McDonalds restaurant down on the corner (where ever you are in the world) DOES NOT bake their buns in the basement of the restaurant every morning. They contract a local or regional bakery to bake them according to McDonald's recipe.then the buns are delivered to the restaurant. This is done all over the world.and where ever you are.which ever bun you get with a particular hamburger or sandwich.the buns taste the same.even though they were baked at different bakeries. (now I have to watch out.someone will invariably find a McDonalds with a bakery in their basement! ) Both of these are used throughout Europe (Volvo, VW, Porsche, MB, BMW etc.) I sold the car at 275K miles without ever changed the fluid or neither the clutch.
