That's a responsibility we take seriously, one that deserves the best effort we're capable of.The Fujifilm FinePix F470 is the latest in a long line of slim digital cameras from Fuji, and at first blush there's nothing in particular that separates this model from the dozen or so others out there with similar feature sets. Not quite as svelte as Fujifilm's stylish Z1 and the soon-to-be released Z3, the 3.6 x 2.3 x 0.8-inch F470 has a 6-megapixel CCD sensor, a 3x optical zoom, a 2.5-inch LCD, and ten scene modes. There's nothing truly revolutionary here, but that's not always important. What is important is the Fuji F470's utility.

Again, we're not talking about a speed demon of a camera, but perfectly adequate for family outings or group photos. Marketing jargon aside, the camera moves along briskly with few stumbles. Though a fairly standard shot with good late afternoon light, Fuji's color algorithms really brought out the purple, yellow and green of the awning and the red of the tenements bricks. The overhanging tree is also rendered nicely with rich, but not oversaturated, realistic looking green leaves.Sharpness degraded a bit when zoomed out to 3x which is typical for cameras in this class. Because the Fuji F470 has neither image stabilization nor a real usable ISO setting above 200 (the camera's ISO400 produced poor results), fully zoomed shots should only be attempted in good lighting conditions when you can hold the camera steady. Some shots I took of a bowl of radishes in what I though was manageable indoor light for the Fuji F470's ISO 400 setting looked overly orange and were very soft and fuzzy. Switching on the flash, however, produced a nice still-life with good color and non-blown out whites.Definitely not the camera for anyone who likes to get creative with the settings, which is probably why Fuji buried the limited manual control the F470 has. In movie mode, the camera can capture video clips of up to 640x480 pixels at 30 frames per second with monoaural sound. Simply increasing the size and design of the icons so they're easier to read might be a good starting point. Buttons were also fairly easy to use, if a bit small for my fingers. The Fuji F470's rechargeable battery can capture a slightly below-average 200 images per charge, according to CIPA standards. The camera also comes with 16MB of internal memory. Though its low-light capabilities are lackluster, in regular daylight shooting conditions, or when shooting with flash, this little camera can capture some bright and boldly colorful images.
Though the camera's polycarbonate body has a plastic feel in spots, the generous metal accents give it solid durability. But the Fuji F470 is really about as slim as you want a digital camera, and other than being slightly longer than some competing slim models, it can fit easily into a pocket, though I don't recommend squeezing any digital camera into your jeans because it can become damaged. Instead, stow the Fuji F470 safely in a case in a backpack or hand bag and you're good to go. A slight swell on the right side (from the user's perspective) provides a decent hand-grip. On the back of the camera, as inelegant as it may seem, is a circular indenture that looks like someone pushed their thumb into a piece of clay. Turns out it's a perfect spot for your thumb and gives you easy access to the zoom rocker. The one minor gripe I have about them -- aside from my usual rant about how insanely small the buttons are -- is that it's easy to accidentally turn the Mode Dial out of the Auto setting into the Scene or Movie modes. The Mode Dial surrounds the shutter button. Make sure you're in the mode you want or you might mistakenly be taking a slow-sync flash shot in Night Mode when you're standing outside in bright sun. Resolution is decent too at 115,000 pixels and playback rendered fairly accurate images. The LCD has a gain-up control that senses low-light situations and automatically brightens the display to compensate. The user can also brighten the screen manually by using the top arrow of the four-way nav ring in shooting mode. There is no optical viewfinder on the Fuji F470. Though it's a little slow (and not particularly smooth) when zooming all the way out to the full 3x optical, shutter lag at the end of the telephoto registers an average 0.61 seconds. On the wide angle, lag is shorter at 0.56 seconds. When you pre-focus things improve quite a bit, as expected, with shutter lag dropping down to 0.103 seconds.

In full Auto mode in daylight shooting situations, the Fujifilm F470 is a beginning photographer's dream with a responsive image processor for good shot-to-shot performance. Though it doesn't use one of Fuji's much ballyhooed Super CCD HR sensors, the F470 employs a more than adequate 6 megapixel CCD image sensor that can capture the sort of rich, dramatic color Fuji has been known for since its roll film days. And you can view your shots on the big 2.5 inch LCD. Though I prefer shooting in low light without a flash, the Fuji F470 I tested took some pretty decent photos with its flash engaged, avoiding overexposing the whites. But if you like a small camera you can easily slip into a bag while driving around town or travelling and forget about until it's time to shoot, the F470 is designed for you. While I was most impressed with its portability, the Fuji F470 can take some dynamite pictures in the right lighting. Fujifilm. The F470 has standard 6-megapixel sensor (as opposed to a Fuji SuperCCD) at the top of its spec’ billing, 10-scene modes include the usual bits and bobs, such as portrait, landscape and sports and a flower close-up mode among others.
Each menu is contextual, providing a different set of available options depending on what mode or scene setting you’ve set the camera to use. So, while menus are too prevalent in terms of speed off use and control, they are otherwise easy to navigate. A few external controls particularly for white balance and exposure compensation would not go amiss on the handling front. And that’s the rub, with such a svelte camera, the more buttons and controls you stick on the outside, the bigger it has to be, and the one thing the F470 does not have is lots of real estate for buttons. There are three settings, Auto, Movie (640x480-pixel movies (max) with sound at 30fps) and Scene Position, where you can access the aforementioned scene modes. Best compact cameras 2020: The best point-and-shoot-cameras available to buy today. On the front, the camera’s 3x optical zoom lens is very nice providing bags of detail all the way to the image extremities and gives a 35mm to 105mm (35mm film equiv.) focal length range, enough for most general uses. The four-way control also provides for the flash, macro, self-timer and LCD brightness controls. The lack of an optical viewfinder is another concession to the camera’s smallness and the LCD brightness control on the back only goes some way to help as the screen is quite reflective; in bright conditions the screen can still be a challenge to use. Images can be stored on the camera’s 16MB of internal memory but you’ll get just five images if that’s all you use; factor in the price of an additional external xD-Picture Card in your budget, it’s the camera’s removable storage of choice. Power is supplied by a neat little lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack from which you will get around 200-images according to Fuji, in reality, I got around 130-shots with plenty of reviewing but not much use of flash. Connectivity is via a USB2.0 Hi-Speed port and cable; you get a DC-in socket and AV out port too.
Other features include an in-camera image trimming function and voice annotation while PictBridge and EXIF Print are also built in to help out with direct print functionality with compatible printers. In terms of handling and speed the F470 is fast but with noticeably more focus lag at the full zoom end than at the wide end, however, it is not so bad as to cause major issues. Disappointingly, where the response is less good in with sensitivity, which is particularly modest, providing an ISO range of auto, 64, 100, 200 and 400; the last setting providing not enough scope for low light snaps without flash and without noise problems. This is particularly so when compared to Fuji’s higher end models such as the F30 Zoom, which can get up to the dizzy heights of ISO 3200. Focus and metering are unerringly accurate so overall you get a good balance of ease of use and image quality. Its price makes it an attractive proposition too and while it may lack some finesse at higher ISOs, in brighter conditions and for general subjects it is unlikely to let you down.
