The problem is that in a nutshell, when the key goes in the ignition, a unique ISN security code number is transmitted to the EWS system. This then verifies that the gearbox is in PARK, via another coded number, and relays this back to the EWS system, which then sends another coded ISN to the starter motor and the car will crank over. It is waaay more compicated than that though, and if the auto gearbox is gone, and the auto gearbox DME unit is removed, the car will not start. Also, the engine DME for an automatic car, is slightly different to the DME for a manual car, in that it interprets signal inputs from the engine for load, speed, etc, and then relays them to the automatic gearbox DME, which then alters ratios, etc to suit road conditions. Physically bolting everything in is the easiest part. The programming will be the biggest headache. I would say its better to buy another car, rather than try this. Including the instrument cluster, EWS, engine DME, ABS, etc. A software reflash or update from Dinan or whoever, is not going to be enough to reset your instrument cluster, EWS security system and ABS electronics I would think. I may be wrong- maybe they have something for auto to manual conversions, but it just seems unlikely, with all the complexities involved. The E39's body electronics management systems were not made to be reverse engineered, or altered, because BMW didnt envision that. I've been considering pulling out the 3.5L V8 from my car, and bolting in the more common 4.4L V8 out of a 540i of the same year. But even that is a major headache, because I cant put the 540i DME into my 535i to run the new V8- the 540i DME wont communicate with the 535i EWS system, and after looking at it at length and talking to BMW AG in Germany, its too expensive to bother with, and not worth it. It may be possible, but nobodys ever done it. And I'm not brave enough to screw with my cars electronics systems, because it could get expensive.

The new M62B44 originally came from a car with an auto transmission, and therefore some of the plugs and connectors differed from the ones in my manual 535i. We decided to leave the headers out, due to the trouble of taking the engine out with them still attached. In hindsight we probably should have removed the entire front and left the headers on for the drop in, because tightening the header nuts with the engine in the car is a true PITA.The tool consists of an input shaft from a Volvo transmission(probably from a B20). Since the old ZF 5-speed transmission, clutch disc and pressure plate was re-used, a 535i flywheel had to be fitted.We had a no spark no fuel issue to begin with, turned out that I had mixed up the connectors for the reverse light and crankshaft sensor on the transmission. They are pretty much identical. Also had to replace the coils with the old ones, the new ones caused misfires. She now works flawlessly; no problems with the clutch slipping despite having an extra 100 nm of torque, and the engine management accepted the bigger engine without any issues. The fuel trims seem to have adapted to the bigger displacement, but a flash to the appropiate software will be done later on to squeeze out the last percent(s) of performance. TRANSMISSION The transmission (Getrag 6S6 420G) is incredibly clean and has no broken sensors, cracks or damage to the case. Comes with shifter linkage and stick. There is no shift knob, but I am sure you would want to replace it anyway. The “Guibo” looks great and appears to have been replaced since it left the factory. The rubber mounts for the cross-member appear to also have been recently replaced. The cross-member looks great, although a little dirty. DRIVESHAFT Drive shaft appears to be in perfect condition except for the center support bearing. These are tough to install used and it is best to replace it anytime you are unsure of how old it is. The U-joints are in perfect shape without any “flat spots”. The CV joint at the rear should be serviced and this includes replacing the boot. I have never seen a nicer flywheel on a 540i. I ran my fingernail along the surface of the flywheel and it is smooth. It has just a hint of coloration and no “bluing” or heat build up on it. The clutch disk looks barely used. Judge for yourself in the photos. The pressure plate looks great. PEDALS AND CLUTCH HYDRAULICS Pedal assembly is complete with switches, clutch master cylinder and pedal pads. This also comes with all clutch hydraulics. The metal and rubber line from the master cylinder to the clutch slave cylinder is included, although it looks a little worn. The outside fabric is coming away from the braided clutch line. This is an expensive part and I think you could risk using it. The clutch slave cylinder looks good and is included. The reservoir for the clutch hydraulics is the same as the ones on the automatic equipped 540i, one cuts a nipple to fit the blue hose to feet the clutch master cylinder.
