For extremely close-up shots, the Macro Mode lets you move in as close as 10cm.

A trick I used to use if I could not get a focus lock was to try to focus on a different subject the same distance away as the attempted subject then holding the shutter release down at stage one, move back to the original subject and complete the shutter sequence, again this method was a bit hit and miss but I did achieve some fair results. All said and done I would say I was reasonably happy with this camera but if I had my choice over again it could well be a different camera that was chosen knowing what I know now. Wiley Updated: 21 Oct 2011 11:30 pm Posted: 12 Dec 2001 8:00 am Fujifilm timed the release of the FinePix 2600Z perfectly. Obviously, everyone's scrambling to get the goods on the market this time of year, but my hunch is that the company will sell a good number of these cameras this season, despite current economic conditions. Hell, they may sell well precisely because of current economic conditions. It lacks many of the advanced and manual features we've come to see even on moderately priced cameras, but the image quality and accessory bundle go a long way. While experienced photographers will no doubt want something more sophisticated, the 2600Z is a solid entry point for someone looking to get into digital photography without too much of an investment. Each image can be enlarged to two sizes: web friendly and full size. Other than shrinking the web friendly pics, they are untouched. I simply ran them through PhotoShop to size and name them. I didn't adjust the contrast, brightness, or any other variable. I like to think that this gives the most honest results from the camera. (You could always touch images up to your own liking.)Length- and width-wise, it's not much larger than the Digital Elph or Kyocera Finecam S3. Luckily, even with the batteries installed, it tips the scales at an acceptable 9 ounces flat. Click image to enlarge. Even better is Fuji's (wise) decision to protect the lens with something a bit more substantial than an ill fitting cap. The only downside is that powering on the unit involves two actions: turning it on and opening the cover. Considering that you're screwed if you scratch the lens, I'd say that this is an acceptable sacrifice.

The top of the unit has a power slide and a three-position mode dial, which can be set to Record, Play, or Movie. The left side of the body has two jacks: AC and USB. The right side has only a strap hitch. This shared compartment means that the camera necessarily turns off while memory cards are switched - somewhat lame but hardly a deal breaker. Click image to enlarge. The default setting for the screen is off, which save batteries, but a quick depression of the Display button lights it up. The only beef I have is that the LCD is somewhat dark.Lastly, in the top right corner are three controls: Left, a zoom toggle, and Right. The controls are basic to say the least, but you have to keep in mind that this model is aimed at the novice. There are a few options in auto mode and a small cast of manual tweaks, but the offerings are somewhat lean. There is no need to list Movie options because there aren't any. The camera will record Motion JPEG shorts at a resolution of 320 x 240, ten frames per second. Unfortunately, the is no microphone, so your flicks will be silent. This means that even with a tripod night shooting is severely limited. I'm really not sure why this limitation was imposed by Fuji; it is annoying and seems arbitrary. The quality and accuracy of the colors surprised me the most. They were basically honest, with perhaps a hint of oversaturation across the board. The lens faired very well with macro shots. (The macro mode can maintain focus to 10 cm.) The focus was nice and even in the subject matter. The backgrounds were obviously wasted, but that's the nature of the beast. Take the sky shots, for example. You will notice a sort of haze of digital noise over the image, but clarity is even throughout.I think the image samples show that pretty well.In addition to a 16MB SmartMedia card (hey, it's better than an 8MB mini!) the camera comes with a pair of rechargeable AAs and a wall recharger. It's nice to see the rechargeables with such an affordable camera.

It offers good image quality, extreme ease of use, and practical design. If you're an experienced film photographer looking to cross the digital divide, then I suggest looking for different passage. The same goes for those of you looking to upgrade. But if you are starting out and don't want to break the bank, this is a fine model.

Manufacturer Overview Long a powerhouse in the world of film-based photography, Fujifilm is staking out broad swaths of terrain in the digital domain as well. As evidence, we point to the number and variety of digital cameras they've introduced this year (2000). On display at PhotoPlus Expo East in New York City's Jacob Javits Center in November 2000 were a range of cameras stretching from the inexpensive 1.3 megapixel FinePix 1300 (the subject of this review) to the pro-grade S1 Pro digital SLR. Their broad scope and competitive pricing left no doubt that Fujifilm is making a strong play for all segments of the digital imaging market. Other recent Fujifilm digital camera introductions include the FinePix 40i, which targets the young consumer with MP3 and QuickTime Movie capabilities, plus a very cool, high-tech, palm-size body that comes in silver and metallic blue in the American market (a pink version is available in Japan); the FinePix 4900 Zoom, which has a more sporty SLR look, with a 6X Super EBC Fujinon aspherical lens and a 2.4 megapixel Super CCD; and the FinePix 2400 Zoom, with a 2.1 megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom lens. Apparently replacing Fujifilm's MX-1200 model, the FinePix 1300 features a 1.3-megapixel CCD, capable of creating images as large as 1,280 x 960 pixels, and a fast USB computer connection. (It does appear that the MX-1200 will remain in the lineup for at least a little while, since both the 1200 and 1300 are being sold at this writing in November, 2000.

Excellent Results On Photographs Taken. Easy Instructions To Download To PC Giving A Very Professional Finish To Items Transferred.I bought it.” I bought it after reading all the good reviews about it, but not as good as I thought.I would appreciate if you would tell me how I can download the software that is referred to in this article thanks a bundle I purchased a top line Varta charger and hydride batteries. The picture quality is great for a basic camera. A mate has the finepix 2400 and there's not much between the two. It's really easy to use so long as you choose the auto setting. For a basic camera if you turn auto off you seem to be able to set most options manually (I'm definitely not a professional photographer). The flash has a surprisingly good range. The 1280 x 960 resolution together with the wide-angle lens gives incredibly sharp pictures with accurate colours. It's worth forking out the extra to get the NiMH batteries and additional 32Mb card, which can store 50 pics at the highest quality. The NiMH batteries last OK, but the camera sucks the life out of ordinary batteries at the same speed as the shutter. In the end, experience of Fuji was the overriding factor and I haven't been disappointed. The 8mb card is great for storing lots of pics. Stumbled over internetcamerasdirect on a web search to see who had it in stock and was surprised to see how much they undercut others. And the icing on the cake was.Needed to be simple, reliable and reasonably good image quality. Veuillez en lire attentivement les instructions d’utilisation.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Given the price, it was definitely the way to go. The results are at about the same as with the film camera I brought. Since it was much smaller than the film camera, we used this one almost exclusively. My only real complaint is that there's no audible indication of when you're switching from optical zoon (better quality) to digital zoom (less quality). Given the price range and picture quality, I think this is the best camera to buy. Pro's - Very easy to transfer files via USB, the LCD screen is clear but a little small, flash is strong, auto levels work well, the normal 640x480 setting captures 40-50 pictures that look really good, perfect for my web site doublefunkcrunch.com, auto-formats for jpeg and has a resize function to 320 after the picture is taken at 640 or higher, viewfinder zooms with the zoom in function. Rechargebable AA batteries work well on a day PER day basis, has good popular features. Con's - Lens cover is weak. This is a problem because opening the cover also activates the camera and camera lens. If the cover begins to close shut, the camera turns off which is very confusing to unfamiliar users. The camera's powersave mode turns on too soon, forcing you to turn it off and back on again which gets very annoying. After you take a picture, the LCD does not cache the image long enough to see it forcing you to switch the camera mode to playback. In semi-dark rooms, you must use the viewfinder because the LCD is not bright enough to see the subject. Does not perform well in low light moderate speed situations without the flash.

Although I've learned that the battery life with this camera is better than on others, it still drains batteries rather quickly. I purchased rechargable batteries and a charger as it was more cost effective than purchasing an AC power adapter. Lastly, I haven't yet experienced this problem, but professional reviewers have stated that the case may become scratched. Personally, I feared that the LCD monitor may. For this reason, I purchased a generic soft case. The end result being what every photographer attempts to achieve: The images are true and of quality. Please try again later. Please try again later. Although it's probably going to happen soon, I realized I still needed a simple point and shoot digital with decent resolution that ddn't cost an arm and a leg- with casmera getting cheaper every few months I didn't want to spend too much on a camera I might be replacing in a year. Still, I wnated something with more than enough resolution for high-quality web pictures, and maybe even 4x6 prints, which meant around 1.3-1.5 megapixels. I also decided I wanted a simple, removable media with no moving parts, and some degree of manual exposure control. I've been shooting this marvelous package for a week now, and it's lived up to my expectations in every way. Focusing is fast and accurate, with an optional macro range for closeups. Color accuracy is first rate, contrast is superb, and the finished prints need very little, if any, correction. Battery life is the best of any of the digital cameras I've tried- turn off the LCD monitor and a st of 4 AAs will last 450 shots. That's a lot better than my Agfa, which ate a pair of AAs with every 16 shots. The supplied software includes a program to download and manage pictures directly and a copy of Adobe's Photo Deluxe, which is looking moe nad more like Photoshop all the time. It's a measure of the camera's human engineering that I used it for a full day before I opened up the instruction manual. It's just that intuitive.

Turn it on, and shoot. That's it. The zoom control falls right where you need it, under your thumb, and the opticla finder zooms with the lens. No need to turn on the LCD unless you want to edit in the camera or check a precise closeup shot. (You can also zoom in, crop, and do other edits on the image while it's still in the camera). If you want to take greater control, there are menus that let you vary exposure, flash behavior and many other variables as well. The supplied 4MB SmartMedia card holds 12 high resolution, standard compression shots. You can increase or reduce image compression to get higher quality or more pictures, and you can switch to a low-resolution mode when you need to squeeze a lot of pictures onto one card. The standard compression mode gives such good images that I wouldn't hesitate using high compression for web photos in order to double the card's capacity. I'd suggest a few accessories that I found made the camera easier to use. First, another SmartMedia card. Second, an accessory SmartMedia reader. Last, a small well-padded case with a strap, and preferably with multiple compartments. I carry mine in a Domke bag that has room for the camera, a couple of extra media cards, a cell phone, pens, pencils, the instruction book (there's a lot this camera can do I haven't even explored yet) and a set or two of spare batteries. I'm thinking of adding yet another SmartMedia card, too; with a 32MB card I'd have a total of about 160 shots, or the equivalent of between 5 and 6 rolls of standard film. Not bad. Please try again later. Please try again later. Ralph Thayer 5.0 out of 5 stars For the record, this is my first digital camera. Though I have not yet made any prints from the digital images I have taken with this camera, I am very well satisfied with the color and sharpness in the daylight macro images taken in my rose garden as I view them on my iMac.

I wish it did because my subjects are usually lit with colored stage lights which the built in flash washes out. If I don't use the flash, the image is blurred and out of focus. From the United StatesIt has optical (as well as digital) zoom, a USB connection (essential since I use the Macintosh), a LCD preview that you don't have to use (which saves batteries), and a relatively small size. Given the price, it was definitely the way to go. The results are at about the same as with the film camera I brought. Since it was much smaller than the film camera, we used this one almost exclusively. Keelor 4.0 out of 5 stars My usual methodology when trying something new is to read everything I can get my hands on and then take the plunge. So, starting with the fact that I have a 6 year old Dell desktop running Windows 95, I upgraded to Windows 98 and added a D-Link two slot USB card. Then, after comparing features and quality against price, I chose the FugiFilm FinePix 1400. So far, I think it's a good choice. I'm really impressed with the simple straightforward ease of taking pictures and the picture quality. My desire is to overcome that feeling of disappointment when you get your pictures back from Walmart and they're not what you expected. Digital is instant! If you don't get the picture you want, shoot it again and erase the first one. Very efficient. Please try again later. Please try again later. DMinor 5.0 out of 5 stars I use them for my eBay photos. Thank you! Please try again later. Please try again later. Octavia 5.0 out of 5 stars Meeting, in fact EXCEEDING, all my criteria, I can't sing higher praises for the Fuji FinePix 1400 Zoom.

As a first-time digital camera purchaser, simplicity was a key point in my search. I did not wish to forego versatility however nor limit or forego options or functions. I have purchased other products in the past which either due to advances in technology or due to limitations of that product, I was forced to upgrade rapidly, which was disheartening, bothersome and costly. This Finepix 1400 has been highly rated throughout the industry (see CNET, ZDNET, PC Magazine, others) and I sought the advice of techies at my place of business before deciding on this make and model. Sleek, lightweight and compact, accessing its functions are almost self-explanatory. Resolutions and framing can be changed with the touch of a button. I am able to erase single or all frames with the touch of two buttons. The camera has an auto flash, red-eye reduction (which doesn't always work), forced flash, suppressed flash, self timer, slow synchro for night scenes, macro (close up) photography settings, 3x optical zoom and a 2x digital telephoto. The flash is built in, as is the lens cover. The autofocus serves me, but there is also a manual mode for more experienced, or for those photographers seeking special effects. To my delight, I have needed no tech support from Fuji whatsoever. Problems and inconveniences which I have encountered are minor considering the features this camera has to offer. They include: Red-eye reduction doesn't reduce red-eye,; In daylight, it is difficult to see the subject(s) through the LCD monitor (I use the view finder feature when this occurs).; and, The camera takes the actual picture a split second after you depress the shutter button, so you are not taking the picture in real time. Other suggestion are to purchase separately a SmartMedia card that stores more information than the included 4MB (with the 4MB I am only able to take 12 pictures at the highest resolution setting).

The camera can take pictures in your choice of three quality levels (basic, normal, or fine) and one of two pixel sizes (640x480 or 1280x960). Indeed, any larger size can be reduced to a smaller size (to the minimum 320x240). This can save space on the SmartMedia card, or reduce transmission time over internet email, for instance. The camera comes with one 4MB SmartMedia card. But unlike a true thru-the-lens viewer, the parallax error in this camera is significant. The installation of the software drivers, and downloading over the USB interface to my iMac with MacOS 8.6 went without a hitch. Besides a larger SmartMedia card, other recommendable additions include one (or better yet, two) full sets of rechargeable batteries with recharger. And, if you plan to spend time using the in-camera editing features, consider getting the AC adapter, too. And those with advanced interests might want to take advantage of the camera's ability to edit various Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) settings. My verdict on the Fujifilm FinePix 1400 Zoom is that it is a very good value as an entry-level digital camera capable (within reasonable limits) of capturing excellent images for computer viewing. In today's marketplace, there are but two or three that can directly compete with it for price and features - especially for owners of USB equipped computers. Please try again later. Please try again later. S. Smith 4.0 out of 5 stars I bought this camera for the features and price. Actually, it is a little more complicated than I wanted because I'm not a techno junkie. It takes great pictures and is quite compact. I also bought the Kodak rechargeable batters and charger, a 32mb smartmedia card, and a case logic brand case. The software was easy to install except you have to search to find the Adobe photodelux pgm. I did have to get usb ports installed. I thought that would be better than having to buy a card reader.

The transfer from camera to pc is fast, but with the included software, you have to save each picture individually while the camera is running. Instead, I learned to do it via My Computer by selecting all, copying all files, and pasting to a folder of my choice. I would like to get a card reader, but I need to find a reliable one without problems. In summary, the Fujifilm 1400 is a great entry-level camera. We bought it over the 1300 because of the lens cover. Please try again later. Please try again later. Shafir Ahmad 5.0 out of 5 stars Overall, image quality is excellent. I can hardly see the jaggies in any of the photos except at extreme magnification. As for prints, this does a very good job for most printers. I have the Epson 870, and since the printer is so good, you need to feed a better quality image into it to get rid of the jagged lines. I used Paint Shop pro to upsample the image to double the size and got impressive results. (In my opinion, they are better quality 4x6 prints than I can get at the photo labs here.) Battery life is good with alkaline batteries. Overall, much better than i had expected (with all the horror stories of battery burning out so fast with other cameras). With rechargable batteries though, I'm not having so much luck. One problem I have with the camera is that after taking a photo, it just shuts down by itself when the battery is low (without any indication). Fuji has to improve on the battery remaining indicator, which does not seem to work well in my unit. Exposure wise, it takes good photos in the day or night. If you use the flash, some of the photos get under or overexposed frequently, especially in closer distances. I tend to get more red-eyes often, cos I forgot to turn on the red-eye mode on the camera. The camera also allows forced-flash, forced no-flash, red eye and auto modes. The 3x optical Zoom is good if you need to zoom in closer.

I can't seem to find any use for the digital zoom though, as it only zooms x2 in one step, ie either you get 1x or 2x, which can easily be done using software like Photoshop or PSP. The best thing about this camera is that its easy to use. No fiddling around with hundreds of settings etc. It only has a play mode and a record mode. In record, thats where you take pictures and set options such as image size, quality, macro mode etc. In play mode, you can view the pictures (and zoom in and pan around) and erase if recessary. Also provided is a mode where you can view 9 pictures at a time. The EXIF viewer software that comes with the camera is excellent for a post mortem look at what settings the camera used. Since the camera is automatic, you cant make any adjustments to the shutter speed or apeture, but after downloading to your computer, you can see what settings were used for a particular shot. In the Asian edition, There was no image software included, but I think the American edition comes with Adobe Photo Deluxe. One of the things you really need to buy is more memory. The camera comes with just 4MB of memory, which can only hold 6 images at the finest resolution at 1280x960. I'd recommend getting at least a 32MB card, which will allow about 50 pictures. (The camera actually takes slightly more or less photos depending on the complexity of the subject). I have sometimes gotten just 5 pictures using the 4M card. Data transfer to the PC is excellent. Very fast, and no trouble at all. Just make sure you have Windows 98, as it doesn't work on Win 95. Overall, Value for Money! Please try again later. Please try again later. Kevin Cooney 5.0 out of 5 stars I was taking a month long trip overseas, and paper box cameras no longer cut it.

It had to be small, (fit in the pocket), rugged (I am a downhill skier), weatherproof (I backpack when I travel), capable of 3 times zooming, and last of all, I am picky enough about photos that I wouldn't pay for a camera that didn't shoot really good pictures. As a point of reference, my favorite analogue camera of the past was my old Nikon. I compared online and in stores many cameras over a month long period. I associated digital photography in the past with lack of resolution, and poor color. Things have really improved. In the end I deciced that there were two price points that provided the best bang for the buck. The only drawback was the size of the camera, which was a little larger then what I could deal with skiing. The Toshiba at a little less money, was also very, very good. These cameras both have greater then 3000 pixel resolution. Of those three brands, the Fuji had the right combination of USB, AA battery power, three times zoom lens, small size, and ruggedness including a built in lens cover. On the other hand, it had received rave reviews from the online photo magazines. In the end i bought it. I took over 650 photos on my trip, from 10,000 feet to sea level, from inside the Pantheon in Rome to the back alleys of Naples. It is an absolutely reliable piece of equipment. If I made sparing use of the video screen, a good set of alkaline batteries lasted three or four days. In the end two things I really appreciated were the 1.3 meg resolution -- because I could get so many more pictures on the media -- and the AA battery power supply because I could always find good batteries fast. When the smart media card was filled I was able to quickly and conveniently download through the USB port into my Mac Powerbook. My two eleven-year-olds used it all the time. It got dropped, stashed, smudged, and slammed around in backpacks. It was rained on, snowed on, and eaten over.

As far as I know, it was never fully submerged in water, but it spent a lot of time stuffed deep in pockets, jostling with maglites and coins and pocketools. The camera does have a few limits. The flash is only good to about ten feet; there is no real time, read out on pictures remaining or battery life. If you go down to a lower resolution setting, this problem disappears. On the other hand, the menu is pretty intuitive. About half an hour is all you need in terms figuring everything out. In short, the Fuji 1400 a tough, thoughtful piece of engineering, and a powerful creative tool. I know a lot of people might underestimate the Fuji because of the price point, or the 1.3 megapixel resolution, or because, as I said, it just seemed to good to be true. Please try again later. Please try again later. Dom 5.0 out of 5 stars I have to admit I don't take pictures all that often. In fact I haven't had a camera of any sort for several years. One of the things I dislike about photography is dealing with developing film and sticking pictures in albums. If you are like me, then a digital camera may be just the thing for you. I shopped around for lower priced digital cameras including Sony, Nikon, and Kodak. I settled on the Fuji FinePix 1400 because of its excellent value and combination of features. Features of the FP 1400 that caught my eye were USB connectivity, small size camera overall, regular viewfinder (as well as LCD display), and a good sliding lens cover. The regular view finder will come in handy if the LCD screen is washed out in bright sunlight. Turning off the LCD also conserves batteries. Don't forget to buy an AC adapter. Fuji's AC adapter has a long chord which means you can even use it inside to take pictures without using up the batteries. I also use the AC adapter while viewing my photos on the LCD screen and while downloading to my computer. The AC adapter is well designed so that it can fit into a regular outlet without hogging both recepticals.

When the X-ray generator, tube voltage, patient, menu, positioning setup, and elapsed time from exposure remain unchanged, the S value is a relative measure of the X-ray dose and is inversely proportional to it. For example, the S value is approximately doubled when the dose is reduced by half. 7 The tests are performed by conducting a quantitative and visual inspection of test images and the ACR Mammography Accreditation Program Phantom (MAPP). Perform the tests in the table below as the baseline (first measurement) for each QC test. If you are unsure about the status of your equipment, then ask the Fujifilm imaging specialist, service engineer, or your physicist. STEP 1: SETTING BASELINE TEST CONDITIONS When testing equipment, it is very important that the test conditions are reproducible and consistent. Always start by using your most consistent X-ray room and equipment. Select an IP and cassette of each size that are in good condition to be put aside for the QC tests. Now record the AEC sensor position, settings, X-ray generator, target, filter, grid and Image processing parameters that are being used clinically and that you will use for the ACR MAPP. Ensure that the menus shown in the following table are available. If you cannot find the menus, create the menus according to the table on the following page. 10. Select a viewbox or diagnostic workstation designed for final interpretation of mammographic images that is located in a low ambient light environment. Also, mask unexposed areas of the image to reduce glare. Luminance and ambient light measurements are recommended in order to check that viewing conditions are adequate. These are included as part of a yearly physics QC tests. The use of a magnifying lens with 2x magnification or greater is recommended for evaluating tests from film. STEP 2: THE QC TESTS Before starting, read through the tests that make-up the QC program.

Dedicated Imaging Plates (IPs) and Cassettes Some of the tests described in this manual utilize both sizes of the IPs and cassettes that are designed for the imaging of high resolution mammograms. The customer should reserve one of each size IP and one of each size cassette for Quality Control testing only, and should clearly identify these items as intended for QC only. These IPs should not be used for patient imaging; and only these reserved IPs, and cassettes should be used for QC procedures unless otherwise directed in this manual. Use only the cassette and IP type designated for use with your Reader Unit (RU for mammographic imaging and QC testing. Clearview RU: Cassette Type DM with HR-BD IP. Aspire CRm RU: Cassette Type CH with HR-VI IP. Cautions: Perform the S value Conformation test prior to the remaining Acceptance and QC tests, using only molybdenum (Mo) target and Mo fi lter at 25kVp. If the mammography X-ray unit will not allow 20 mr exposure, you may use the lowest mr exposure available greater than 20. Always use 25 kvp for this test. Do not use any additional filtration. The use of another fi lter may cause an error. 6. Usually the S value is displayed with other data in the hard copy or soft copy display. The meaning of the S value differs from that of relative sensitivity or relative speed used with screenfilm systems. Nonetheless, the S value can be used as a guide that roughly represents relative sensitivity. The S value varies if the positioning setup changes even if the X-ray exposure and tube voltage remain unchanged. If the exposure voltage (kvp) changes, the histogram changes, varying the S value. If the X-ray apparatus changes, the S value changes even if the same exposure conditions are used. Even when exactly the same conditions are employed, the S value changes if the time interval between IP exposure and IP insertion changes.

Make an exposure using the technique factors described in Step Wait the predetermined interval time and process the IP using the Physics ACR MAPP menu. NOTE To reduce the influence of IP image fading characteristics on this test, it is important to control the time interval between X-ray exposure and reading of the IP. It is important that the interval be consistent whenever this test is performed. We recommend choosing an interval between 5 and 10 minutes, then using the same interval consistently. 6. Calculate CNR using the QC calculation tool and record the value in the data form. 7. Perform the Weekly CNR Test on all mammographic exposure units at your facility that use this CR Reader. PRECAUTIONS AND CAVEATS Always be sure to use the same IP and cassette for this test. Always use the same exposure technique as established in Step 1. Always wait the same amount of time between exposure and processing of the IP when performing this test. Always erase the IP before performing this test. Each exposure unit will produce a unique CNR baseline value. Be sure to only compare weekly test results against the baseline of the same exposure system. CNR baselines must be re-established after major service or replacement events. Calculate the new CNR baseline from 5 times of measured tests as described above and establish a new baseline. 17. If the CNR of the new image exceeds these limits, repeat the test confirming that all technique factors are correct. Failure of this test can be a problem with the X-ray exposure unit or CR reader unit. If the CR reader unit is used with more than one mammography X-ray exposure unit, continue to perform the Weekly CNR Test on all mammographic exposure units used with the CR reader unit. If one exposure system fails and other exposure system(s) pass, it is likely that the cause of failure is related to a change in the X-ray exposure system. Retest the failed system.

If the system fails the second test, the problem must be identified and corrective action taken before any further examinations are performed using that exposure system. Review the PRECAUTIONS AND CAVEATS section to help determine if the change in CNR is related to a service event or replacement product change that requires a resetting of baseline CNR values. If all exposure rooms fail and there has been no service calls or change in equipment in the exposure room, the problem may be related to the CR reader unit. If this test produces results that fall outside the action limits as specified by the manufacturer, the source of the problem shall be identified and corrective action shall be taken on the component(s) that caused the failure before any further examinations are performed using the failed component(s). If the component(s) that caused the failure (e.g. exposure unit, CR reader unit, display device) is replaced by an alternative device and the mammography system passes the re-test, image acquisition and interpretation may continue using that combination of devices. 18 FREQUENCY This test must be carried out initially at installation, after appropriate calibration of the equipment to establish a baseline level. With mobile mammographic equipment, the performance of the system must also be confirmed after arriving at a new location and prior to imaging patients, in addition to the weekly test. Center the phantom, left to right. 4. The 4mm thick acrylic disc required to be placed on the phantom for hard copy QC may be present during softcopy QC, but is not required for softcopy QC. For QC of softcopy used for final interpretation, proceed to step For hardcopy QC, secure the acrylic disk to the top of the phantom within the image area but position it so it will not obscure details in the phantom. A suitable location is between and slightly below the first and second largest fibers.

Ensure that you have access to everything listed under Required Test Equipment before beginning each test. The relevant test result forms are found at the end of each test section. It is important that you prepare for the quarterly REPEAT ANALYSIS as soon as you begin using this QC program. Although you will only be doing the test quarterly, you will need to start collecting the reject images now. The annual tests are intended for the medical physicist and are more involved than the other tests. A dose meter and densitometer will be required. These must be calibrated and have a calibration certificate. These tests may also be needed if a problem arises during the daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly testing. For example, if artifacts appear on images, it is recommended that you do the artifact evaluation test. Test images should be stored for future reference as directed in the test procedure. 11. Confirm that the FCRm reader unit has successfully passed the S Value Confirmation Test. Using the baseline setup from Step 1, expose the ACR MAPP or other FDA approved phantom following the procedure in Phantom Image test (Test 2, Section B) and produce a baseline image. Repeat this twice so that you now have 3 images with the same level of quality. If significant variation is seen between the 3 images, it is important that the system is checked before continuing with the QC program. Consult with the Fujifilm applications specialist. Choose one of the 3 comparable ACR MAPP images to be used as a reference for future tests. Also, in accordance with the procedures of the Image Quality Evaluation Test, score the phantom image to determine how many fibers, speck groups and masses are visible. These scores will form the baseline for the ACR MAPP image tests. STEP 4: TESTING AND CORRECTIVE ACTION LOG Once the baseline values have been recorded and ACR MAPP baseline images have been acquired and logged, it is possible to begin the QC program.

During routine QC testing, a result may exceed the acceptable limits. When this occurs, repeat the test to confirm the results. Investigate and correct the problem as directed in the test procedure. 12 NOTE This procedure is designed to measure the performance of the exposure system FCR mammography system is a digital imaging system. Image density is programmed to a specific level when using the auto or semi auto modes such as those used in routine mammographic projections. Unlike screen-film systems, optical density is not directly related to exposure. Density and contrast are controlled by image processing. FREQUENCY This test must be performed at installation after relocating the image reader as in a mobile setting before imaging patients. In routine use, perform at a frequency of no less than weekly. REQUIRED TEST EQUIPMENT A 4cm phantom made of acrylic (PMMA) of fully covering an 18x24cm field size. A 0.2 mm Al CNR test object. The 18 24cm dedicated QC Mammography cassette and Imaging Plate. Place the loaded cassette in the cassette holder assembly. If 125 mas is not available on the X-ray generator, use the next highest mas setting. Note: Establish the baseline CNR value by performing this test five times and averaging the five CNR values. As the positioning of the aluminum plate may have some effect on the calculated CNR, remove and reposition the aluminum plate after each exposure to reflect this normal variation in the baseline. Record the CNR value from each exposure on the CNR BASELINE WORKSHEET. Repeat this process whenever a new baseline is required (see Precautions and Caveats). 16 Make sure that the aluminum object completely covers the area shown in the diagram below. Calculation Areas (20mm 20mm) Aluminum Object 20mm 60mm BG 20mm 20mm Al Acrylic Slabs Chest Wall Side 3. Bring the compression device into contact with the phantom. 4.

Once located, the disc may be permanently attached to the phantom with super glue. 6. Bring the compression device into contact with the phantom. 7. Verify the location of the AEC detector. It should be in the same location used for previous phantom images and completely covered by the phantom. 20. Recall that mas will change significantly in the AEC mode if a different kvp, target, or filter is selected. This step, plotting mas, is optional and not required. 10. After exposure, ensure that a predetermined interval time between 5 and 10 minutes elapses prior to the reading process. NOTE It is important to control the time interval between exposure and reading of the IP. To minimize variability, it is recommended that an interval be chosen somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes and that this same interval be used consistently. 11. Record the AEC density control setting on the control chart. 12. For printed images as a final interpretation: Measure the following densities. The background density should be measured at the geometric center of the phantom image. The measured OD must not be less than The DD measurement is obtained by subtracting the density inside the acrylic disc from the density directly adjacent to the disc, in the direction perpendicular to the anode-cathode axis. For consistent results, these measurements must be made at the same location each time. Plot the background optical density and the DD on the Hard Copy Phantom Control Chart. VIEWING CONDITIONS Phantom images should be read under optimal viewing conditions. General lighting should be at a low level and diffused. Viewboxes or workstations should be positioned to avoid light from windows, other viewboxes, and other sources of bright light, either direct or reflected. Images should be masked to eliminate extraneous light. Use a magnification of 2X or higher for scoring speck groups as well as other test objects. DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION 1.

When scoring the phantom image, each object is scored separately. Always count the number of visible objects from the largest object of a given type (i.e., fiber, speck group or mass) downward until a score of 0 or 0.5 is reached, then stop counting for that object type. 2. Count each fiber as one point if the full length of the fiber is visible and the location and orientation of the fiber are correct. Count a fiber as 0.5 if not all, but more than half, of the fiber is visible and its location and orientation are correct. Add each full or partial fiber to the total score, from the largest down to the smallest visible, until a score of 0 or 0.5 is reached. 3. After determining the last fiber to be counted, look at the overall background for artifacts. If a fiber-like artifact appears anywhere in the wax insert area of the image, but not in an appropriate location or orientation, deduct the artifactual fiber from the last real half or whole fiber score if the artifactual fiber is equally or more apparent. Deduct only from the last real fiber. Record the final score after artifact deduction in the appropriate space on the chart. 21 22 4. Use large field of-view magnification to assist in the visualization of specks. For hardcopy images, use a 2X or higher magnifying glass. For softcopy images, use the workstation s electronic magnification function. Starting with the largest speck group, count each speck group as one point if four or more of the six specks in the group are visible in the proper locations. Count a speck group as 0.5 if two or three of the six specks in the group are visible in the proper locations. Count a speck group as 0 if none or only one of the six specks in the group is visible in the proper location. Add each full or partial speck group to the total speck group score, from the largest down to smallest visible group, until a score of 0 or 0.5 is reached. 5.

After determining the last speck group to be counted, look at the overall background for artifacts. If noise or speck-like artifacts are visible in the wrong locations within the area of the wax insert, and are as apparent as the real specks, deduct them one for one from the individual specks counted in the last whole or half speck group scored, and adjust the score of the last group appropriately. A mass is counted as 0.5 point if the minus density object is visible in the correct location, but the mass does not have a generally circular appearance. Add each full or partial mass to the total mass score, from the largest mass down and until a score of 0 to 0.5 is reached. Record the raw mass score before artifact deduction. 7. After determining the last mass to be counted, look at the overall background for artifacts. If a mass-like artifact is seen in the wrong location within the area of the wax insert, deduct the artifactual mass from only the last real whole or half mass scored if the artifactual mass is equally or more apparent. Record the final score after artifact deduction in the appropriate space on the chart. 8. Using magnification, carefully examine the image for non-uniform areas, the presence of dirt or dust artifacts, grid lines, processing artifacts, or any other artifacts and compare the image to the original and previous images. 9. Notice any artifacts or grid lines on the image. The medical physicist can provide assistance in identifying the source of the artifacts. NOTE Mammography phantom images should always be viewed By the same person, if possible On a quality-controlled QA Workstation, Primary Interpretation Workstation, or Viewbox Under the same viewing conditions as the Radiologist review stations Using the same type of magnification used for reading mammograms Soft copy images should be window and leveled to best demonstrate the objects of interest 22 View more What is FFDM QC and why is it.
